Open access one of the subjects of discussion among the scientific community emerged as a new revolutionary trend in the information access and delivery. The genesis of the all the developments in the present world can be traced to the classic concept of scholarly communication which was evolved in the early 17th Century. The advances in ICT have given rise to the idea of open access to scholarly communication for the new trends and it has been a subject of discussion at several national and international forums and attracted LIS scholars, teachers and practioners all over the world. In this context the Department of Library and Information Science of Bangalore University, has taken initiative to organize an International Conference on the broad theme "Open Access – Scholarly Communication Reincarnated".
The incidence of Open Access is traced to Budapest open access initiative – 2001 and later declaration made in Berlin and Bethesda hence it is termed as BBB-Initiative. India has also subscribed to this philosophy as number of scholarly journals from reputed learned societies and institutions are put on open access. The scholarly communication has been one of the main discourses and the subject of discussion in LIS curriculum therefore has been part of academic research and an active professional practice. So in this context organizing an International Conference on Open Access is timely and appropriate to deliver a message of Open Access Initiative (OAI) and its developments to the LIS professionals and also to promote professional practices and academic research.
